Total Abstinence is More Helpful in Quitting Alcohol Entirely: Study

Moderation in all things may be the key to success in life, but when it comes to drinking, the maxim does not hold true as most drinkers tend to forget it conveniently. People who want to quit drinking are more successful when they give it up in totality, compared to people who continue with moderate drinking and trying to have the best of both worlds. However, one needs to understand that it is impossible to have cake and eat it too.

A recent study by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden claims that those seeking treatment for alcohol dependence and planning to quit drinking entirely are more likely to achieve this goal if they are treated by a caregiver who advocates total abstinence. And since being treated by caregivers who are for controlled consumption, people aiming for a moderation in their drinking are not very successful.

Swedish caregivers have opposing views on the treatment of alcohol problems. One fact is of the view that people with an alcohol problem can learn to control their drinking, while the other faction thinks that there should be total abstinence.

Previous studies have shown that the success of treatment depends on the critical factor of a unanimous view of caregivers and patients, rather than the treatment method which plays the second fiddle. There were no clear views on the influence of the choice of the treatment method on the final outcome. No earlier studies had attempted to look at this angle in the treatment for alcoholism.

Total instability better than imbibing moderate drinking

When the researchers studied up to 201 adult patients 2.5 years after treatment sunset, they found that a shared view between patients and caregiver was responsible for the treatment outcome. They said that people who opted for total instability had greater success in quitting alcohol. ” Instead, patients whose goal was total abstinence were more successful than those who had chosen to control their drinking ,” said associate professor Kristina Berglund , who studies dependence at the Department of Psychology.

They found that nearly 90 percent patients who were still sober at the follow-up were the ones who were in agreement with their care provider on total abstinence. On the other hand, only 50 percent patients managed to control their drinking when their care providers stressed on controlled consumption treatment.

It is easy to believe that the patient and care provider having a common goal is the most important factor in achieving good treatment outcomes, but it is not that simple. , it is more difficult to stick to controlled drinking than to give it up entirely , ” Berglund added.

It was evident that there is no middle path in quitting alcohol. One has to go for complete absence rather than hovering and bordering around moderate or controlled drinking.

Freedom from alcoholism is possible

Handling the Emergency: What to Do in Case of Alcohol Poisoning

Typically, booze is the norm in parties, celebrations, get-togheters and holidays in the American culture. Happy occasions mean more alcohol, sometimes to such an amount that it can become life-threatening. When someone binge drinks, his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) arises to such a level that it becomes toxic and results in alcohol poisoning.

Christopher Tedeschi, MD, a professor of emergency medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center, describes alcohol poisoning as just another way to say “very, very drunk.” He added, “It means that our mental status is altered, our respiration is depressed, and we may not even be able to protect our airway.”

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Very high levels of alcohol in the body can lead to stopping critical areas in the brain that control breathing, heart rate, and body temperature, resulting in death.” Alcohol poisoning is not uncommon these days. According to the CDC, an average of six people die of alcohol poisoning every day in the United States.

Understanding alcohol poisoning

Once alcohol enters the body, it is transported by the blood stream to various body parts, and the liver filters out the alcohol, a toxin, from the blood. Alcohol is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream than food. However, the liver can process only a limited amount of alcohol. In fact, it can process only one unit of alcohol in an hour. Whenever an individual consumes more than one unit within an hour, an extra unit is left in the bloodstream. The faster one drinks, the higher is the BAC in the body and the higher is the rate of alcohol poisoning.

A spike in the BAC may affect breathing, heart rate and gag reflex that can trigger unconsciousness and eventually cause death.

Symptoms of alcohol poisoning

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), some of the symptoms are:

  • mental confusion, stupor, coma, or accessibility to wake up
  • vomiting
  • seizures
  • slow breathing (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths)
  • hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness
  • clammy skin
  • declined responses, such as no gag reflex

The NIAAA says that BAC can continue to increase even if a person becomes unconscious due to alcohol poisoning. Alcohol present in the stomach and intestines continues to flow in the bloodstream and spread in the body.

Ways to help a victim of alcohol poisoning

If someone suffices an alcohol poisoning, an ambulance must be called immediately. Alcohol poisoning is serious and a little delay can result in death or a death-like situation. It is risky to assume that an unconscious person will get well by “sleeping it off”; in fact, it will only worsen the situation. Few steps that can be taken to tackle such a situation are:

  • try to keep the individual awake
  • try to put him in a sitting position; if the individual is unconscious, make him lie on his side, which is a recovery position, and make sure he does not choke
  • give him water and NOT coffee as it will worsen the dehydration
  • do not make him walk as he might fall and get hurt
  • do not give him any more alcoholic drinks
