Total Abstinence is More Helpful in Quitting Alcohol Entirely: Study

Moderation in all things may be the key to success in life, but when it comes to drinking, the maxim does not hold true as most drinkers tend to forget it conveniently. People who want to quit drinking are more successful when they give it up in totality, compared to people who continue with moderate drinking and trying to have the best of both worlds. However, one needs to understand that it is impossible to have cake and eat it too.

A recent study by the University of Gothenburg, Sweden claims that those seeking treatment for alcohol dependence and planning to quit drinking entirely are more likely to achieve this goal if they are treated by a caregiver who advocates total abstinence. And since being treated by caregivers who are for controlled consumption, people aiming for a moderation in their drinking are not very successful.

Swedish caregivers have opposing views on the treatment of alcohol problems. One fact is of the view that people with an alcohol problem can learn to control their drinking, while the other faction thinks that there should be total abstinence.

Previous studies have shown that the success of treatment depends on the critical factor of a unanimous view of caregivers and patients, rather than the treatment method which plays the second fiddle. There were no clear views on the influence of the choice of the treatment method on the final outcome. No earlier studies had attempted to look at this angle in the treatment for alcoholism.

Total instability better than imbibing moderate drinking

When the researchers studied up to 201 adult patients 2.5 years after treatment sunset, they found that a shared view between patients and caregiver was responsible for the treatment outcome. They said that people who opted for total instability had greater success in quitting alcohol. ” Instead, patients whose goal was total abstinence were more successful than those who had chosen to control their drinking ,” said associate professor Kristina Berglund , who studies dependence at the Department of Psychology.

They found that nearly 90 percent patients who were still sober at the follow-up were the ones who were in agreement with their care provider on total abstinence. On the other hand, only 50 percent patients managed to control their drinking when their care providers stressed on controlled consumption treatment.

It is easy to believe that the patient and care provider having a common goal is the most important factor in achieving good treatment outcomes, but it is not that simple. , it is more difficult to stick to controlled drinking than to give it up entirely , ” Berglund added.

It was evident that there is no middle path in quitting alcohol. One has to go for complete absence rather than hovering and bordering around moderate or controlled drinking.

Freedom from alcoholism is possible

Although chronic alcoholism could be fatal and calls for prompt attention, it is not the end of the road. Seeking help at the right juncture can make turnaround a possibility for patients. Receiving treatment in a reputable rehab center is the best solution to address alcoholism. To gain sobriety, one needs to start the treatment at the earliest.

Why Your Skin Should Be Added To Your Detox Diet Plan

We all know how our intestines, kidneys, and liver help to rid our bodies of toxins. These are the main organs we are mindful of when we think of a detox diet. But we forget that our skin also plays a huge role in detoxing our body.

Your skin, the largest organ you have, is made up of 3 layers: the epidermis, the dermis, and lastly the subcutaneous fat. These layers combined create a water-proof, barrier so that toxins may not enter your body. Being that the majority of toxins are water soluble, your skin blocks out toxins that may be in the water that you bathe in or swim in.

There are hundreds of types of bacteria on your skin right now, as you read this article. (And to think we are suppose to love the skin we're in!) But not all of them are bad. Staphylococcus Epidermis is a “good bacteria” responsible for keeping all of the “bad bacteria” on our skin in check. Without good bacteria, our skin would be ruled by bad bacteria, which in turn would damage your skin and extremely aid in toxins entering your body.

It's very important to maintain healthy skin, especially during your detox diet. We all know to wear sun block when exposed to the sun for prolonged periods of time, and to wear gloves when dealing with toxic products. But like everything else, it's not about what you know, it's about what you do not know. Swimming in a pool containing unbalanced chemicals and smoking cigarettes can also damage your skin. J. Greg Brady, a dermatologist at Advanced Dermatology Associates, says that when you smoke, your skin gets less of the oxygen and nutrients it needs to stay healthy. You definitely do not want to make it harder on your body to do its job.

Your skin plays a huge role in your detox diet. Which is why it's recommended to to be included in your detox diet plan. Skin is a one man army in sense that it can heal itself when hurt, while still doing its job of blocking toxins from entering your body. Be careful to avoid toxins and always keep your skin properly nourished with vitamin C, sulfur, and omega-3 fatty acids.

Fun Fact: Did you know that sweating is one of the most effective ways our body rids itself of toxins? Scientist estimate that sweating can remove about a third of the toxins our kidneys can!

I recently lost an uncle last year. I can honestly tell you that his biggest regret was that he never took care of his body on the inside. He passed away from colon cancer. The sad thing was, his doctor told him if he had caught it sooner he could have contained it. No matter how you do it or what you use, start taking care of yourself today. Get to the doctor when you are supposed to be there. Get the necessary check ups. Take the necessary steps. It is never to late to take control of your health!

How To Do The Juice Cleanse Diet Without Side Effects

You've probably heard some unpleasant info about the juice cleanse diet, but there is actually a proper way to do it. You primarily have to consult a physician before doing a juice cleanse diet, especially if you plan to do it for more than 3 days or if you have a health condition.

You'll be consuming all fruits and vegetables when you go on a juice cleanse diet. It's basically a form of a detox diet. You stick to that diet for a short period of time, usually 1 to 3 days. Some programs entail that you consume one or more smoothies to provide for your fat, protein and other nutrient needs. These smoothie foods fuel your energy and at the same time reduce your hunger. Some juice cleanse diet programs include snacks and vegan meals.

Does the juice detox diet work? Proponents of the diet say that it promotes the natural detoxification process of your body. It also provides you with a healthy diet sans the caffeine, sugar, refined foods and other substances that deplete your energy. You can jumpstart your day with a healthier way of eating.

Foods consumed in the cleanse are rich in nutrients, antioxidants and phytochemicals mainly because they are raw and organic juices. Your body can easily absorb them because they are in liquid form. New components have been added to the cleanse to enhance your energy as well, such as snacks and vegan and gluten-free meals. These also make your experience of the cleanse less extreme.

You use a juicer or a juice press when you prepare your juice cleanse diet at home. In many cities, you can also avail of the cleanse in local juice bars or larger store chains. Try searching online, you can access cleanse programs, too.

  • One or five days before doing the actual cleanse, you first do some preparations. Otherwise, if you quickly jump into doing the cleanse, you may experience cravings, headaches and some withdrawal symptoms. It's called the pre-cleanse stage where you also increase your intake of fruits, veggies and fluids.
  • Then you do the juice cleanse diet for 3 days where you take at least 32 ounces of smoothie or juice. Half of this amount is green vegetable juice. Milder cleanses include smoothies and vegan foods. They may be used as substitutes at the same time. Between each of these “meals” you may consume lukewarm or room temperature water. You consume the juices or smoothies 2 hours apart while you take the final drink at least 3 hours before sleeping. What about hunger pangs? Some cleanse programs tend to suggest taking vegetable broth or eating small snacks such as a piece of fruit, salad or carrot and celery. A modified juice cleanse has been devised for certain people where salad is included each day for lunch and dinner.
  • You then break the cleanse after your juice fast. Over the next several days, food is typically reintroduced into your diet. Not everyone can do the cleanse, that's why it is important to be informed about the juice cleanse diet prior to adhering to a certain program. Note the side effects of the cleanse and learn how to deal with hunger along with other concerns about the juice cleanse diet.

Synthetic Marijuana Deadlier Than Its Natural Form

Synthetic marijuana, also known by other popular street names, such as K2 or spice, is a rage among the youth. However, it can cause devastating effects when used in an uncontrolled manner, warn the experts. Prepared from a combination of synthetic cannabinoids, chemicals and mixtures of herbs, synthetic marijuana is potentially more dangerous than natural marijuana. It is often marked as incense that can be smoked.

LaTely, the use of these mind-altering substances has gone up drastically in the United States. Depending on the dosage and the resilience of the user, the effects of synthetic marijuana on the brain are akin to that of regular marijuana, which include paranoia, panic attacks and giddiness. But the intensity and gravity of the effects of synthetic marijuana are far-reaching.

More dangerous than assumed

Often, the effects of synthetic marijuana are indebted as “zombie effect” because an addict tends to like like a zombie after consuming the drug. Symptoms of extreme distrust, panic attacks, anxiety and psychotic episodes are associated with acute paranoia. Most of the behaviors of K2 addicts are unpredictable. The robust and combustible behavior of the users of synthetic marijuana can be attributed to the chemical in spice or K2 that is hundred times more potent than the tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the main psychoactive ingredient present in marijuana.

It is true that the use of regular marijuana can inducation psychosis where there is a little delineation from reality, but use of synthetic marijuana is marked by severe psychosis and uncontrolled behaviors in the users. The chemicals present in synthetic marijuana are not deemed fit for the human body. Moreover, the new trend of buying the stuff online, which is beyond the purview of any regulation, prevails the user from ascertaining the source of the drug and this makes it more dangerous.

Manufacturers outsmart regulators

It is not that regulators, such as the US Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA), have not tried to intervene and prevent the proliferation of drugs like synthetic marijuana, but the manufacturers often outsmart regulators and manage to find a way out to flood the market with spurious drugs. When the DEA highlighted the five compounds found in K2 in 2011 and included them on their list of illegal substances, the manufacturers tinkered with the chemicals and dodged the regulations with ease. Thus, newer versions of K2 found their way into the market that they potentially more dangerous than the previous ones. The newer version of K2 can cause low blood pressure, a lower heart rate, seizures, coma and kidney ailments.

To clamp down on such massive illegal flouting of regulations by dubious drug manufacturer, efforts have to pour in from all stakeholders.

Recovery roadmap

Whether it is a normal marijuana addiction or a chronic dependence on drugs like K2 or spice, the long-term effects of drugs are always intimidating. Addiction is a scourge, not only for the addict but also for each member of the family. However, it is treatable with love and effort from close ones and a willingness from the addict to go sober.

Things to Know About Drug and Alcohol Detoxification

Making a decision to seek treatment for addiction to drug or alcohol, and then sticking to it is very difficult. A great deal of courage and grit is required to accept the fact that one needs treatment for attaining sobriety. Detoxification, which helps remove the toxins from the body accumulated for years due to continuous drug and alcohol abuse, is the first step towards the recovery process.

However, many people have preconceived notions about detox that might be deceiving. One needs to understand that a successful recovery is a grim affair without detox. Listed below are some of the facts that an individual needs to know about the detoxification process:

  1. Drug and alcohol detox is the first part of the treatment process: Just by opting for a drug or alcohol detox does not make you sober. A comprehensive treatment follows detoxification that includes therapies, medications, counseling, and alternative treatments, etc. Detox helps to free the body of all the harmful toxins accumulated due to the prolonged abuse of a drug or alcohol and also helps manage difficult withdrawal symptoms.
  2. Detox must be completed before starting the next part of treatment : The body should be free of all the toxins before a comprehensive process of therapies and medications that can be administered to a patient.
  3. Detox should be done under a medically controlled setting: Quitting the substance of abuse without any medical supervision can have adverse consequences. Detox must be transported out in a clinically controlled setting, under the supervision of medical professionals who are able to handle the painful withdrawal symptoms.
  4. Undergoing detox is not easy: The process of detox is not easy. The body will crave for the substance during the process and there will be withdrawal symptoms. However, doctors are well equipped to handle such situations and a focused mind can help a patient come out of the agony of drug instability.
  5. Detox length is not the same for all: The detox length is not the same for all. It will depend on the severity of the condition, the type of drug or alcohol consumed, his / her ability to overcome the withdrawal symptoms or any other mental health condition, etc.
  6. Relapse after detox can increase dependence: One should try to avoid drugs after detox because relapse will only increase dependence on the drug. In fact, seeking detox treatment from clinically supervised treatment centers helps in relapse prevention and prepares the body for a holistic treatment.

Benefits of detox

Detox is the first and an indispensable part of the recovery process because it frees the mind and body of drug and alcohol dependence. As the body gets rid of the toxins, an individual regains control over his behavior and the body slowly beginning to heal from the acute exploitation by the drugs or alcohol. Patients regaining their brain chemistries with their health getting back on track. The risks associated with drug or alcohol addiction start minimizing once the body is cleaned.

It is, however, true that detox is not the first and last step of a recovery process. It needs to be followed by proper therapies, medications and other alternative treatments, like yoga, meditation or exercise, which can help an individual thwart the ill effects of long-time drug or alcohol indulgence.

Water Is Life

Scientists have taught us that the total mass of the earth is about two-third water. Most other things in life also contain water in very significant quantities. Talk of the food we eat and the fruits too. It could not be strange to discover that, those hard materials you see daily and everywhere have their respective significant amounts of water. The human body is noted to be made up about 60% water.

Take a glass of water, even when you are not thirsty, and you will feel a kind of satisfaction. Whenever thirst sets in, drinking water creates a special mode of relief that can only be surpassed by gaining breath during resuscitation. Water is life; it is the second most important substance after the air we breathe in. Its essence is hard to quantify in words and numbers, because it does so much more than we already and can even imagine.

In the fruits we eat, despite their varying levels, water still institute their biggest proportion by mass. Let us look at the following list as an example:

Food / Percentage / Water

Lettuce / (1 c cup) / 95%
Watermelon / (1 c cup) / 92%
Grapefruit / (1 c cup) / 91%
Milk / (1 cup) / 89%
Orange juice / (3/4 cup) / 88%
Carrot / (1 c cup) / 87%
Yoghurt / (1 cup) / 85%
Apple / (one medium) / 84%

WHAT AMOUNT OF WATER DO YOU NEED DAILY?

The amount of water needed by an individual daily is dependent on a number of factors. Although in the past, we had been made to accept the notification that we should drink a minimum of eight glasses of water everyday; results of recent researchers have overturned this near misconception. It is never in doubt that water is good and very important; however its consumption should be governed by size, level of activity, the weather, and your general health.

Following the results of the researchers conducted by Heinz Valtin, published in the American Journal of Physiology in 2002, in which question the old belief of 8 glass cups of water a day, he concluded that the major determinant of water consumption quantity should be thirst. The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in America also agreed with his findings. They published new guidelines, in 2004, which removed the eight-glasses-a-day recommendation, and say healthy adults may use that to determine their fluid needs. Despite the little controversy, the significance of water has never been in any serious doubt.

The IOM report was based on surveys and it recommended 11-plus cups a day for women and 15-plus cups a day for men. These are for total fluid intake, including fluid from all food and beverages.

Some 80% of our water consumption is through drinking water and other beverages, while the remaining 20% is obtained from food. Assuming these percentages are accurate for most of us, the recommended amount of beverages, including water, would be approximately 9 cups for women and 12.5 cups for men. A lot of our foods are significantly water, particularly, fruits.

WHAT WILL DRINKING WATER DO FOR YOU?

Honestly, drinking water will do more than you can imagine. Water is life; it brings satisfaction whenever you it. Eating without drinking water can choke especially if starchy foods like eba (cassava extract) is involved. To say that water is essentially a part of a balanced diet is to say the least. We can look at the following as other benefits of water.

IT BOOSTS YOUR ENERGY LEVEL

Drinking water does a lot to help you gain energy, when taken in moderate quantities to requirements. Thirst is due to dehydration and the only remedy is hydration: drink water. There is an experience of tiredness when thirsty due to dehydration. The energy level increases once water is consumed. But when too much is taken, weakness sets in.

IT LOWERS YOUR STRESS

Some four out of five of the tissues in the brain are made up of water. When there is dehydration, there is shortage of water. This condition leads to stress. However when water is consumed, the tissues become hydrated. Consequently, stress is reduced or eliminated. Drink water regularly and momentarily.

IT BUILDS YOUR MUSCLE

You need to know the meaning of turgidity. That is strength in a way. Water fills the muscles and makes them strong from being enlarged. It is never a serious way of building large muscles, like the body builders we see in the magazines, online and television as models. It also helps the muscles to prevent cramps and lubricates the joints. In addition, when you drink enough water, you will last longer in your exercise sessions.

IT NOURISHES YOUR SKIN

Dehydration causes wrinkles and lines on your skin. It makes skin looks old and ugly. Nature, however, provides a beauty cream in the form of water. The skin cells are hydrated and pumped up to make the skin look young and beautiful. It glows because water flushes out impurities in the blood, improving circulation and blood flow.

IT REDUCES KIDNEY STONES

Kidney stones are crystals formed by excess salts and minerals in the urine as it passes through the kidney. Drinking enough water regularly dilutes the urine inhibiting the formation of kidney stones. Diluted urine does not allow kidney stones to form. Drink a lot of water.

IT HELPS DIGESTION

This, perhaps, is the most important benefit. Water aids the digestion of foods. Waste particles are, also, easily dissolved and passed smoothly through the digestive tracts. In a case when there is dehydration, the body absorbs all the water; makes it hard for digestion and passage of waste.

IT HELPS WEIGHT LOSS

This can never be stranger than it is; yet it can also never be truer. You should exchange the mineral (soft) drinks that are laden with many calories with drinking more water. Metabolic reactions are increased to improve the burning of more calories. When you drink water, especially chilled cold one, the body generates heat to warm up the water, in the process burning off a few calories.

Water is life and its universal significance can in no way be substituted for any other substance. It is filling and fulfilling. It is healthy and invigorating. It is surplus and indispensable. Above all it is basic in the constitution of all cells, tissues, organs and systems of all organizations.

Handling the Emergency: What to Do in Case of Alcohol Poisoning

Typically, booze is the norm in parties, celebrations, get-togheters and holidays in the American culture. Happy occasions mean more alcohol, sometimes to such an amount that it can become life-threatening. When someone binge drinks, his blood alcohol concentration (BAC) arises to such a level that it becomes toxic and results in alcohol poisoning.

Christopher Tedeschi, MD, a professor of emergency medicine at the Columbia University Medical Center, describes alcohol poisoning as just another way to say “very, very drunk.” He added, “It means that our mental status is altered, our respiration is depressed, and we may not even be able to protect our airway.”

As per the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), “Very high levels of alcohol in the body can lead to stopping critical areas in the brain that control breathing, heart rate, and body temperature, resulting in death.” Alcohol poisoning is not uncommon these days. According to the CDC, an average of six people die of alcohol poisoning every day in the United States.

Understanding alcohol poisoning

Once alcohol enters the body, it is transported by the blood stream to various body parts, and the liver filters out the alcohol, a toxin, from the blood. Alcohol is absorbed more quickly into the bloodstream than food. However, the liver can process only a limited amount of alcohol. In fact, it can process only one unit of alcohol in an hour. Whenever an individual consumes more than one unit within an hour, an extra unit is left in the bloodstream. The faster one drinks, the higher is the BAC in the body and the higher is the rate of alcohol poisoning.

A spike in the BAC may affect breathing, heart rate and gag reflex that can trigger unconsciousness and eventually cause death.

Symptoms of alcohol poisoning

According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), some of the symptoms are:

  • mental confusion, stupor, coma, or accessibility to wake up
  • vomiting
  • seizures
  • slow breathing (fewer than 8 breaths per minute)
  • irregular breathing (10 seconds or more between breaths)
  • hypothermia (low body temperature), bluish skin color, paleness
  • clammy skin
  • declined responses, such as no gag reflex

The NIAAA says that BAC can continue to increase even if a person becomes unconscious due to alcohol poisoning. Alcohol present in the stomach and intestines continues to flow in the bloodstream and spread in the body.

Ways to help a victim of alcohol poisoning

If someone suffices an alcohol poisoning, an ambulance must be called immediately. Alcohol poisoning is serious and a little delay can result in death or a death-like situation. It is risky to assume that an unconscious person will get well by “sleeping it off”; in fact, it will only worsen the situation. Few steps that can be taken to tackle such a situation are:

  • try to keep the individual awake
  • try to put him in a sitting position; if the individual is unconscious, make him lie on his side, which is a recovery position, and make sure he does not choke
  • give him water and NOT coffee as it will worsen the dehydration
  • do not make him walk as he might fall and get hurt
  • do not give him any more alcoholic drinks

Once the patient reaches the hospital, medical practitioners will start the treatment depending on his / her condition.
