2. Coffee

Who claims that coffee cures hangovers has never really been hungover. Yes a strong espresso clears your head if you had a few drinks and went too bed late. But for real hangovers, coffee does not help at all.

What Is a Hangover?

What is a hangover is a popular question and the answer looks to vary, person to person. One way or another, there are a number of common variables that add up to hangover; types of beverages consumed, quantity consumed, duration of consumption, etc. Generally, over-indulgence in alcohol leads to a variety of symptoms, from cotton-mouth and pounding headaches, to soreness and nausea … the list goes on! So what is a hangover !? We'll break it down further in the following paragraphs.

Chemistry

Pick your poison! Whether its beer, wine or liquor, they all have the same common chemical; ethanol, generally referred to as alcohol. The issue with ethanol, is that as the body metabolized ethanol, a much more toxic chemical is produced: acetaldehyde. This awful toxin is nearly 10 times more toxic than ethanol and is even more difficult for the body to produce. In particular, acetaldehyde is processed by the liver. Several anti-oxidants are synthesized by the liver to help break down the elevated levels of toxins. For a while, the body can keep up, however, once consumption envelopes these anti-oxidants, acetaldehyde begin to accumulate. This accumulation is one answer to “what is a hangover?” The accumulation of acetaldehyde acts as an oxidative stress on the body, yielding many of the negative side effects we experience after drinking. (eg nausea, soreness, dehydration, etc.).

Dehydration

The second answer to “what is a hangover” is dehydration. After the sunset of what's often referred to as “breaking the seal,” frequent urination shortly follows. This is a direct consequence of consuming alcohol. Our bodies are designed to keep all of our systems in equilibrium and that includes our levels of hydration. In particular, our kidneys are responsible for maintaining hydration, balance of electrolytes, and nutrients. Ethanol effectively tricks, or confuses, receptors in the body signaling to the kidneys to purge all incoming fluids. The result is that the majority of the fluids consumed are excreted and our bodies do not absorb the appropriate levels of water or electrolytes. Subsequently, we experience many of the symptoms described before; headaches, aches, pains, and soreness. This is yet another answer to the question of “what is a hangover?”

Sleep Deprivation

Sleep deprivation is a result of both the chemical properties of alcohol as well as the social standards of drinking. Late night parties and beer bongs are not helping anyone! Regardless, alcohol itself is a culprit to sleep deprivation. Alcohol directly affects our quality of sleep. REM sleep is the deepest, most restful state of sleep that the body can achieve. Studies have shown that ethanol interrupts this REM sleep, thereby depriving our bodies from a deep resting state. Poor sleep has shown to have a number of negative effects on the body, such as tiredness, aching, and unclear thinking; yet another answer to the question of ” what is a hangover ?”

It is meant to give your body, organs, glands and nervous system a break from constantly digesting and worrying about food. It is meant to purify the body and mind for physical and emotional garbage to move out. Finally, it is meant for the rejuvenation you feel after one.

Now I know most people think that they can eat whatever they want and then “detox, cleanse, or take a laxative” and that will fix everything. This is actually the worst approach because it just stresses the body more and does the reverse of detoxing the body.

There needs to be a structural approach to slowly and effectively “recharge or restart” your metabolism, and cleaning the insides of your body in a healthy way. Seeing an expert regarding this is ideal before taking on such a harsh change, but once you have felt the revamp you will never be the same and will have surprised why you never learned of this sooner.

As a nutritionist, it is important to monitor that people do not overdo the entire “cleanse” mentality but add it to their fall and spring cleaning. Sometimes my clients may do a detox or gentle cleanse with each change in season, but ideally two or three are good a year.

My personal advice would be to do two really good detoxes a year and then do mini clean up sessions through the year. Always check with a specialist when starting any cleanse because there may be some symptoms you may feel while you're removing all the gunk that has been built up for who knows how long. Some people may feel really low in energy or not well at all while detoxing, and others may be reawakened with energy right away. It may be easier to follow a detox program and maintenance program afterwards because they “recharged” quicker than others. Every client may have very different experiences doing a detox but the end result is still the same; a cleaner and healthier YOU.

My last tip to detoxing is that you should book off the week for yourself or if you can not then extra blocks of time for “pampering” yourself during this time. You want to surround yourself with a great support team to go through it with you so that you can get all the help and guidance you need. From my past experience, I have always gotten a few friends to do one with me so we can encourage or complain about the week of cleaning. Every experience may be different from the next and you need to take this as a personal assessment to check your progress for the rest of the year and see what need to be “tuned up”.

Green Poop or Green Stool is a condition in which the feces appear with a greenish tint or green color. It may be normal in breastfeeding-feeding infants.
