Coffee Is My Medicine – Why Did I Give It Up?

For over 20 years I have maintained, “Coffee is my medicine.” Imagine the shock when I realized recently, that, in fact, coffee has been playing havoc with my health.

Shock. Horror. Dismay.

Here's the backstory: From the time I was a toddler I have suffered from migraines. As a young adult I went to the Montefiore Headache Clinic in New York City. I was put on a strict diet, eliminating every known migraine trigger, including coffee since too much caffeine creates “rebound” headaches. Once my system was “trigger-free” for several weeks, trigger foods were added back one-by-one to see what I reacted to.

With one exception: Coffee.

Coffee replaced all medications: One cup of coffee early in the morning, one cup of coffee around 2pm. My mantra for the last 20 years has been: I can not give up coffee! Doctor's orders!

This came to a crashing halt recently. You see when I created the Spring Clean-Eating ReBoot, a 7-day nutritionally-sound cleansse, I decided, in the spirit of good faith, to eliminate coffee from my diet. Over the course of a week in the very same way I prescribe in the Spring ReBoot, I went from two cups of coffee a day to no coffee.

What happened next shocked me! After completing the cleanse I decided I would add coffee back into my morning routine. I bought fresh beans, ground it to fill the kitchen with that delightful smell, and brewed the perfect cup of coffee in my French Press. I could not wait to taste it.

Oh, that coffee goodness! Full body, lovely bouquet, chocolatey, caramel flavors.

And then? A big, fat case of the shakes!

What? How can this be? I tested it two days later to see if I was right. Yep, same response.

And the reality is … several weeks later … I have less heads without it!

So here's the thing: We hold on tightly to the things that cause us pain. Habits are hard to break, whether it's having coffee several times a day, or insisting on dessert after dinner, or mindlessly eating snacks while watching television. We do not want to give up something that has the potential to cause discomfort. Ironic considering that the temporary discomfort will give way to better health and, extremely, happiness.

I challenge you: What do you think you can not live without? Sugar? Bread? Cheese? Meat? Whatever it is, drop it for a week and see what happens.

Master Cleanse

The Master Cleanse was originally developed by Stanley Burroughs who was an alternative health advocate. Since then a few authors have jumped on the band wagon and written books on the subject which has actually helped make sense of some of the ambiguous content in Mr. Burroughs' book.

If you have not tried it yet I highly recommend that you do but there are a few things I think you should know before you go rushing off to start it.

Master Cleanse also called the Lemonade Diet is not for everyone and if you have any existing illnesses this is not the detox for you as it can be quite brutal, it would also be advisable to seek advice from your doctor before starting any detox not just this one.

What ever you do not just stop eating and start drinking this for 10 days because your body will go into shock! I can not stress this enough, you must start by weaving off fatty processed foods, cutting back on your meat and dairy and start introducing juice or water to slowly wean off caffeine too. Start eating more fruits and vegetables, or you may like to drink smoothies or super food greens instead, that is up to you. You need to do this for at least a week before starting the master cleanse detox.

Part of this detox includes drinking drinking laxative tea and doing salt water flushes, now these can be quite aggressive so please make sure you are not on vacation when you do this … in other words, ensure you are at home and close to a toilet .

The first time I tried it I have to admit I only shipped 4 days, simply because I did not plan and prepare before I started it. I had forgotten that I had people coming to stay so of course I could not continue whilst cooking and entertaining my house guests, it may have proved embarrassing and more to the point I would have found it very difficult to cook up a beautiful meal and then not be able to eat. My point is, make sure you have no other commitments so you can complete it completely otherwise there is no point in starting it.

I did finally do the full 10 days and it was worth the effort despite challenging at times. I felt amazing and my whole body inside and out felt regenerated. I also noticed my sense of taste and smell had improved, my skin and hair looked so much better and the most significant result for me was my digestive system worked so much better and my tummy cramps were gone.

So I can say that it worked for me but can I guarantee it will work for you? No of course not, no one will be able to tell you that.

Some doctors say it is an unhealthy detox and it contains no nutritional benefits and I would have to agree but I knew that before I started and it's not like it's a new diet term, it is simply for detox or weight loss purposes and if you follow the guidelines, prepare and plan and take all necessary precautions before starting it you may just discover what all the fuss is about.

Oil Pulling – Best Ayurvedic Treatment for Oral Health And Detoxification

Oil pulling is known as Gandusha or Kavala Graha in the Ayurvedic treatment text. This procedure is believed to be the pulling out of toxins or the Ama and also enhance the immunity and health of oral cavity.

Gandusha and Kavala Graha are two primary gargling techniques recommended in Ayurvedic treatments for oral care. In Gandusha, the mouth and oral cavity is completely filled with liquid and then released after holding it for some time. In Kavala Graha, a comfortable amount of liquid is retained with the mouth for about 3 minutes, and then gargles are performed.

Gandusha or the Gargles

Ayurveda recommends gargles with oil, herbs and warm water. Oil is to be filled in the mouth to the level that it can not be moved in the mouth. Ayurveda suggests that you need to give a gentle massage to the forehead prior to concluding the procedure of oil pulling. Also, during the act, the mouth needs to be kept up and the liquid, herbal decoction or oil should not be ingested in the process. This may be performed by placing a tablespoon of the oil into the mouth and swishing the oil around the mouth for approximately 10-15 minutes, holding it there and then spitting it out.

How long to hold the Oil for Oil Pulling?

Ayurveda recommends that the gargle liquid or decoction used for oil pulling in the form of Gandusha or Kavala, needs to hold in the mouth for as long as saliva tends to fill the mouth to the brim and mixes into the herb decoction. Also until there is watering from the eyes and nasal cavity and the (bitter) taste of the decoction seems to be overcome with saliva or Kapha formation. This is generally advised to be repeated for three, five or seven times.

• When performed with til tail or the oil of sesame seeds, this procedure is believed to be highly beneficial for the general natural wellbeing of an individual.

Do The Number 2

As they say “You gotta go, you gotta go”.

The rule of thumb is: You gotta go … and go consistently. The way that works best for the body is to go during a certain time slot during the day, every day.

Your body gets adjusted to the regularity and starts expecting you to excrete during the certain time of the day. That is the best case scenario. There is nothing worse for a physically and internally healthy individual than not going. That ruins the whole process and may take a few days to get it back to normal.

Let's look at this scenario.

You usually go in the morning, let's say at around 8 am and at around 9am start your workout. Your body is fresh, you woke up, did your things, did not have breakfast, just had coffee and went to the gym. Body is rested, stomach is empty and you have enough energy for the workout. The workout usually goes great.

Now if your stomach is full, then it will be struggling to keep up with your demands. You will be overworking, getting cold sweat, your stomach will get bloated since it is trying to juggle a few tasks at the same time. The whole workout will be ruined.

In either case, that is what the experience has taught us. For best results, either train in the morning on an empty stomach, or if you are training during the day, eat 2-3 hours prior to workout, keeping in mind that workout is coming and you do not want to overstuff yourself.

And remember no eating between meals. Let your stomach switch off from time to time, and you will see how much more energy you will get from such a little thing.

Hold on a second. What about all those detoxification or detox programs as they have become to known today. Well, from what we know those are based on natural ingredients that are typically blended into green goo that you are required to drink regularly. Basically, it works just like laxative but in a larger bottle.

Does it work? The idea is to clean your intestines of all the crap that has been accumulating there for years. You should feel rested, and fresh afterwards. Unless you want to spend the money go ahead and give it a shot, however we do not think it is required. You can accomplish the same results eating regular food, for example a watermelon is a good cleaning fruit. More about that later.

For now simply keep in mind – do not eat so much in general and definitely give your stomach a rest. Go Ahead. Give it a Try.

Fluoride Is Poison

When you walk into your dentist's office, are you greeted by a very large, definitely hard to miss poster telling you not to forget to have your fluoride treatment to protect your teeth against cavities?

Most of us, at some point, have had a fluoride treatment in the name of protecting our teeth.

The fact is that in the United States, it's illegal to add fluoride to food or to salt; but it's perfectly acceptable, even required in many areas, to add it to the water supply. As early as 1909, it was known that fluoride was an industrial pollutant that harmed plants, animals, and humans. It was banned as a food additive in that same year by the Pennsylvania General Assembly! That was in 1909!

The fluoride now found in approximately 90% of drinking water is hydrofluoric acid. It's a compound of fluorine which is a chemical byproduct of aluminum, cement, phosphate, steel and nuclear weapons manufacturing. In this man-made form, fluoride has no nutrient value at all. It's one of the most caustic industrial chemicals. It's so caustic in fact, that it's the toxin used in rat poison and cockroach powder.

Fluoride in the body destroys enzymes by changing their shape so they no longer “fit”. Once that happens, the body recognizes the modified enzymes as foreign and begin to defend itself, turning on and destroying itself; an autoimmune condition is born.

Did you ever wonder why there is a warning on your tube of fluoridated toothpaste warning you not to swallow it? Well, consider this quote from Procter & Gamble: “A seven ounce tube of toothpaste, theoretically at least, contains enough fluoride to kill a small child.”

And here are a two more facts for you to mull over while you're brushing your teeth with that minty fresh poison:
• Taylor Study, University of Austin: fluoride concentration of 1 PPM (parts per million) increments tumor growth rate by 25%
• Fluoride is more poisonous than lead, and just less poisonous than arsenic – Clinical Toxicology of Commercial Products – 1984

Fluoride also fast forwards the aging process. It dissolves the body's glue by preventing new collagen from being formed. This prevention of collagen formation affects many parts of our bodies … bones, genetic damage, brain damage, teeth; in fact, discoloration and crumbling of teeth as a result of fluoride exposure and ingestion is known as dental fluorosis.

The bottom line is you should avoid fluoride as much as you possibly can. If your water is fluoridated, get a really good filter for your tap, and find toothpaste that does not contain fluoride. It's not as easy as you might think, but you can always make your own … save money and improve your health!

Why We All Need to Pay Attention to Toxicology

Our bodies have been perfectly designed to naturally detoxify and eliminate toxic chemicals. However, every perfectly designed “machine” has a breaking point, especially if it is overworked and is not well-maintained.

It is my mission and passion to spread the truth about our toxic exposures. We are constantly exposed to potentially toxic chemicals and we simply can not escape them. Further, chemicals are not the enemy … until they get to a level that can cause toxic health effects. Many chemicals are natural and it is when they are repurposed or misused that there is the potential for unintended toxicity to manifest.

The reason that I wrote “Talking Toxicology” is because I want everyone to have access to the TRUTH about toxicity, as well as learn how to reduce their overall toxic burden. A guide that is easily understandable and useful to the average person!

There are so many people and young children being diagnosed with completely preventable chronic diseases. When your body is out of balance, it simply loses its ability to efficiently detoxify.

DETOX, TOXICITY & TOXIN are some of the most misused terms !!

So many people that I meet think that they know what detoxification is — but they have NO idea what they are talking about. Often times thanks to inaccurate portraits by junk products. This is beyond frustrating to any Toxicologist. Detoxification is not simply a bowel movement. But marketing of many dangerous products claiming detoxification are nothing more than laxatives, which provide NO nutritional support of the detoxification system. So I caution anyone to stay away from long-term use of products with stimulants and laxative ingredients claiming to detox … this is NOT detoxification … it is a stimulant assisted bowel movement.

What is detoxification? Simply stated it is the biochemical conversion of chemicals into something less toxic (less harmful), so that it will not cause a toxic effect in the body while simultaneously preparing it for elimination from the body. The liver is the main detoxifying organ and as it works to make absorbed chemicals less toxic, glutathione (liver antioxidant) levels will decrease, if these levels are not allowed to be replenished, you can go into a state of saturation toxicokinetics … meaning that your liver is no longer able to keep up with the amount of chemicals it needs to detoxify. The kidneys are the next most important detoxifying organs, as they work to aid in elimination of toxic chemicals. Think about this: when the liver starts to fail, all other organs shut down and death very quickly follows. The kidneys are highly efficient, but when they lose their ability to efficiently eliminate “toxins”, you will no longer be able to eliminate chemicals at a rate which allows your body to function in a healthy state. Ever wonder why there are so many dialysis places of business around you? Losing the ability to naturally detoxify completely impacts the quality of life and overall longevity. But knowing what detoxification is, is not enough …

I am so honored and grateful when I meet people who have made changes to reduce their toxic exposures and who have used nutrition and supplementation to improve their overall health. Many of my physician friends and colleagues want their patients to make these types of changes, but have become frustrated with so many patients that want a quick fix in a prescription and refuse to take any preventive measures. It is not normal to have to take a pill every day just to maintain a semblance of a quality life. Do you know anyone that refuses to make positive changes and throws out the lazy response, “Are you going to die of something anyway?” You probably can not help these people, but I often see some of those same nay-sayers desperate for help and willing to do anything when it is far too late.

Why? Because maintenance is work. Anything worth maintaining is work. Your home, car, clothing, electronics … whatever you choose, needs to be maintained. But far too many treat our bodies like trash cans because we do not feel an immediate toxic effect. There are enough examples around us (often times in our own families) of poor health and suffering caused by years of abuse, but instead of taking responsibility, we make up an excuse to continue to treat our bodies inappropriately.

When I appear in front of a live audience or on television or radio, I do not inform you about potentially toxic exposures to scare you. But I spread the truth about the sheer number of chemicals that we introduce into our own bodies so that you can be aware of this fact and learn to recognize (and hopefully reduce) toxicity. Our bodies gives us signals indicative toxicity that we often ignore. Why is that? I tell you about chemicals because there is NO research that gives us an accurate picture of the consequences of being exposed to consistent and ever-changing chemical mixtures in our air (indoor & outdoor), water and foods – and household products. But there are patterns of toxicity that are emerging in epidemiological studies. Data which are strong enough to contribute to the weight of acceptable scientific evidence.

What can you do? Educate yourself. Be open-minded and do not ignore the truth from experts and from your own body. Eliminate or reduce the exposures that you can control. Use protective equipment when cleaning and maintaining your home and vehicles. Do not overburden your bodies and use nutrition and natural supplementation to help nourish your bodies so that it can effectively detoxify.
