The sweet, smelling air fresheners, reed diffusers, body sprays, scented shampoos are made with synthetic fragrances and yes they are bad for you… especially children and pregnant women. Anyway, we are not going to bore you with endless information on the list of dangers, instead we are going to list a few points on how to protect yourself from these nasties and provide useful information to help you evaluate products in order for you to choose safe alternatives.

1. Avoid air fresheners. They are made with synthetic fragrances, containing phthalates.

2. Watch for any product that lists “fragrance” or “parfum” on the label.

3. Products that claim to be “fragrance free” or “unscented” could contain masking agents that give off a neutral odour, so it is best if the word “fragrance” does not appear on the label at all.

4. Look for scents that are naturally derived or are plant-based or labelled as 100% pure or therapeutic essential oils. These are not the same thing as fragrance oils which are artificially created and contain synthetic chemicals.

5. If a product says “Made with… ” it can mean as little as 1 percent of the ingredients in the bottle.

6. For scented candles, try those made from soy, coconut, olive or beeswax, and make sure their fragrance is made from 100% therapeutic essential oils.

7. To clear the air use a non-aerosol citrus spray containing only citrus peel extracts, which are effective at dissolving airborne odours, instead of scented aerosol sprays, liquids that emit a continuous scent, or solid air fresheners.

8. Labels that claim a product is “natural” or “biodegradable” do not mean that it is necessarily free of synthetic fragrances or other chemicals.

9. Certified Organic products do not contain synthetic fragrances.

It just makes sense to educate yourself and the people you care about… who wants to be breathing in synthetic chemicals and petroleum… YUCK!

Elderberry Syrup From Local Harvesting

Elderberries grow in many parts of the US and other countries. You can harvest elderberries from the wild in most areas with very little effort. All you need is a little bit of education on the plant and the willingness to go out and find them. If you do your research you will find that this is a very easy plant to identify and you can start to enjoy your own wild harvest and the health benefits of this great plant.

There are a few different things that will help you identify this plant. For the purposes of this article we will focus on the blue elderberry tree and my area of ​​Utah since that is what I am most familiar with. Here in Utah Elderberries grow best at higher elevations. In the Uinta mountains that they found in plentiful bunches at about 8,000 to 10,000 feet and probably higher but this is the range I have harvested most. The elderberry tree has a distinct look to it that is unlike any other tree or wild bush. They will grow in clusters and will be between 6 feet to 20 feet tall generally. I'd say a good average is about 8 feet. The clusters of white flowers or blue berries are easy to spot once you become accustomed to this plant.

Pith in the branches, stalks or trunks

Most elderberry trees will appear as a large bush or group of thick branches. They can grow into very large trees however but no matter whether it is a tree or a small bush the identifying pith is always found in the center. This is a sure way to identify this plant.

Compound leaves with opposite leaflets

One other identifier with this plant is the composite leaves with opposite leaflets. This means that the leaves of the elderberry tree actually look like multiple leaves. Each leaflet that grows from the main leaf stem grows opposite another leaflet so we get the compound and opposite terms. Compound means more than one leaflet and opposite means the leaflets grow opposite each other.

Berries and flowers

The flowers and then berries grow in a small bundle at the ends of branches on this tree. You can make elderberry syrup from the berries and you can also make a syrup or extract from the flowers. Both have fantastic health benefits.

An Evening Without A Drink?

For many years I have struggled with the challenge of staying sober at any social event. The very concept of sobriety would scare me so much that I ended up drinking even more than I normally would. How could I stay away from that first drink of the evening? Alcohol is everywhere at a social gathering or party. Usually I simply cave in to my temptation as I felt it was just inevitable that I would be drinking so I would start drinking immediately to offset the battle that raged in my mind. However after many years of doing this I found a simple method that changed how alcohol controlled my behavior.

• 1. In the early evening I found it useful to eat a proper meal before going to a party. Drinking on an empty stomach changed the way alcohol affected me and I always drank more because of this. I discovered it was very important to eat an adequate meal before departing. After eating I felt that I was more in control of my mental perceptions and I felt better equipped to deal with my internal struggle regarding my pending drinking session.

• 2. If you have a close friend who knows of your difficulty with alcohol then ask them to keep an eye on you. If you know someone is watching how much you drink it can make you drink slower.

• 3. Before leaving the house, look in your bedroom mirror and make sure you are looking as well as you can. Clothes are well laundered and ironed and you are well groomed.

• 4. On arrival at the party remind yourself that you can use a glass of mere water as a social prop. It does not needarily need to contain alcohol. Try to extend the time it takes to drink this glass.

• 5. You may be used to drinking large quantities of alcohol at a party but try to drink white wine but with the addition of the water already in the glass. Each time you add wine to your glass, dilute it with water. The water will prevent a sudden rush of alcohol to the system and the feeling of being more in control of your situation will give you a great confidence boost.

• 6. Decide between yourself and your friend (who is looking after you) that you will leave the party at a set time. Promise yourself that you will go somewhere next day, a museum for instance, so that you have a plan that sees further than merely the night in hand. This may help you to diminish the inflated importance that your perception puts on alcohol by giving yourself a reward.

These are simple steps that can be used as a trial. It would also be useful to contact a medical practitioner who can assess your level of alcohol usage with a view to professional counseling. List of Pus and Mucus-Forming Foods

The word “mucus” is from the Latin mucus which means “slime, mold, snot, etc.” Mucus refers to a thick, viscous, slippery discharge that is comprised of dead cells, mucin, inorganic salts, water, and exfoliated cells. It also refers to the slimy, sticky, viscous substance left behind by mucus-forming foods in the body after ingestion. The word “pus” is from late 14c. Latin “pus” (related to puter [putrid] “rotten”), from Proto-Indo-European*pu- compared to Sanskrit. puyati “rots, stinks,” putih “stinking, foul.” Pus often refers to a thick white, yellowish, or greenish opaque liquid produced in infected tissue, consisting of dead white blood cells, bacteria, tissue debris, and serum. It also refers to the substance that dead animal flesh is chemically changed to after being consumed or while rotting in one’s digestive tract. The ingestion of meat and dairy products create pus residue in the body, while starchy and fatty foods are mucus-forming.

From a mucusless perspective, pus and mucus-forming foods are understood to be “acid-forming” inside the human body. Such foods create an acidic internal environment that is detrimental to wellness.

What are Deceptive Mucus-Formers?

Here is a list of foods that many people do not realize create mucus:

  • Rice (great for creating glue to bind books, bad for the transition to a mucus-free diet)
  • Avocados (fatty item that may be used on the transition, but are highly addictive. Although technically a fruit, if used it is best to combine them with a mucus-free combination salad or vegetables to aid elimination. However, it is recommended to stay away from them if you are not already stuck to them.)
  • Nuts (Mucus-forming, but may be used on the transition. It is best to eat with dried fruits like raisins to aid with elimination.)
  • Plantains (Starchy)
  • Tofu (Slimy and mucus-forming.)
  • Un-ripened fruits like green bananas (the riper the fruit you eat the better).
  • Corn (It does not eliminate well. When cooked corn or corn chips are eating it becomes mushy and slimy in the intestines.)
  • Corn chips (Some people use them on the transition, but they are very addictive and do not eliminate well)
  • Beans (They are starchy and mucus-forming. But, they may be used sparingly on the transition within close proximity to green-leafy salads)
  • Starchy Vegetables (Some vegetalbes are starchy and mucus-forming in raw or cooked forms, such as white potatoes. But, many other vegetables, such as sweet potatoes, become almost mucus-free (starchless) after proper cooking.

How to Beat Caffeine Addiction

If you're a caffeine addict, chances are your drink of habit is coffee. Just its smell is almost enough to wake you up! But you also crave the rush of energy. Yes, caffeine is addictive. Caffeine withdrawal is now actually in the DSM-5, the official directory of mental illness! Although the withdrawal is really physical, it can have mental effects, including depression, anger, and lethargy. In this article we'll cover ways to get off of caffeine without headaches and withdrawal symptoms.

1. Taper slowly with decaf. Ten days is a good amount of time. Replace 10% of your coffee per day with decaf or herbal coffee such as Teecino.

2. Go to bed earlier. If you're getting enough sleep, you will not need so much caffeine.

3. Try adrenal supplements. Licorice and ginseng support your adrenal glands, which are stressed and weakened by coffee and stress – it's a vicious circle. The condition is known as adrenal fatigue. If you give the adrenals some support (try three months' worth) they'll strengthen. If you feel severely fatigued, visit a holistic / integrative doctor for testing on your thyroid and adrenals.

4. Meditation is a great natural high. Mindfulness meditation can put you in touch with your feelings, and you might find you prefer them without stimulants. As you build up positive emotions through meditation, you'll feel clear minded and energetic without coffee.

5. Try the Emotional Freedom Technique, a series of tapping points. It's an energy medicine proven to work. Start with tapping on “even though I need coffee to wake up and work …” (if you're not familiar, a Google search will turn up many sources of info, as will YouTube).

6. Exercise. It will give you natural energy and stimulate natural opiate receptors.

7. Journal. Keep a journal of your caffeine in intake. Note how you are without coffee.

8. If you can resist temptation, you can still enjoy the smell of coffee by sitting in a coffee shop. If you can not resist, then stay away.

9. As soon as you wake up, do something to distract yourself from thinking about coffee.

10. Use other caffeine drinks while you're tapering, such as green tea. This will get you away from depending on coffee, while reducing caffeine.

11. Yerba mate is a superfood that can provide energy without jitteriness.

12. Reward yourself every day of the time you spend cutting down, with a bigger reward at the end. These can be free, such going to a place you enjoy, watching a show, any little indulgence you normally deny yourself. Addiction feeds the brain's reward center, but so do other trees.

You will feel much freer once you're not dependent on a drug to get through the day.
